Frequently asked questions
What is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is the process of briefly exposing the body to extreme cold for up to 3 minutes for therapeutic benefit.
Whole Body Cryotherapy was first used in 1978 by Dr. Toshima Yamaguchi to treat his patients suffering with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
For decades, elite athletes and trainers have used ice baths to speed recovery and reduce pain and inflammation from muscle and joint soreness.
Today CryoDay Vitality & Wellness clients enjoy improved athletic performance and recovery, drug-free pain management, and anti-aging and wellness treatments with the Benefits of Whole Body Cryotherapy as the foundation.
Can anybody do Cryotherapy?
While the vast majority of people can enjoy the benefits of Whole Body Cryotherapy, there are certain medical conditions that are contraindicated.
Pregnancy, severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, severe Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, and infection. Minimum age requirement of 16. Children under 18 must have parental consent and have a parent present during treatment. Additional information can be found on our Medical Waiver, which can be found on our website at www.cryoday.com/waiver
How will I feel after a Cryotherapy Session?
In a word...Amazing! Whole Body Cryotherapy stimulates the body to release endorphins, which make us feel alert and energetic. The energized effects from each session can last 6-8 hours after the treatment. Many clients experience improved sleep, due to reduced pain, and improved mood too!
What is a typical treatment time?
Our Whole Body Cryo treatments never exceed 3 minutes. We provide our clients with gloves, socks and footwear to protect extremities. Our Cryotechs are well-trained and caring, and they maintain direct eye contact and conversation throughout your session.
With the innovations in Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), we can now achieve the same benefits of a 1-hour ice bath a single 3-minute session!
How cold is it?
Our specialized Cryosauna uses nitrogen vapor to bring the temperature of the cabin down to -110°C. The goal is to reduce skin temperature by 30°F to 50°F. When our skin is exposed to this sudden extreme cold, our brain interprets the cold as a threat causing the “flight or fight” response to kick in, sending blood from the extremities to the core. This sets off the body’s natural defense mechanism, the autonomic nervous system. This is a group of physiological responses that send the blood from the extremities to the core where it is hyper-oxygenated. Vital nutrients (like temporarily stored fats and glucose) are pulled into the bloodstream, and the immune system is stimulated to increase white blood cells. Adrenaline and norepinephrine are released increasing serotonin (the happy hormone) and adrenaline, which acts as an analgesic, or pain reliever.
Is there any "downtime" after Cryotherapy?
There is no downtime after a cryo session. Please remember: it's important to hydrate after each cryo session.Other than that, keep your normal routine. As you go about your day, you will notice you have more energy, less pain, and a general sense of well-being. You will probably have a great night's sleep too!
What to wear?
CryoDay provides our clients with apparel to protect your extremities during treatment. Women have to option to be nude (bra optional, but no underwire) and men must wear undergarments.
How many treatments are needed to acheive optimal results?
We recommend all clients experience the therapeutic dose of cryotherapy, 3-5 sessions in their first week of treatment. This allows the body to go through the process of the blood circulating and becoming re-oxygenated to where inflammation is naturally starting to decrease. After the therapeutic dose, your Cryoday staff member will recommend a cryo plan for you varying from once a week for “maintenance” to daily cryo sessions depending on what it is you are coming in to treat.
What does Cryotherapy feel like?
Cold! Your first “freeze” is an exhilarating experience, but it's quick. No other therapy can do for you what Cryotherapy can, and in 3 minutes! In fact, just 3 minutes in our Cryosauna is equivalent to an hour in an ice bath!
Our CryoTechs will walk you through the process. Before you know it you’re done and ready to return to your daily routine feeling energized with increased energy, improved mood, and reduced pain.
How often can/should I do Cryotherapy?
At Cryoday Vitality & Wellness, we recommend our clients do no more than one Cryotherapy session daily.
The treatment I had, when I had a very sore shoulder, I could only move it 50%. After a few treatments I was able to touch ear on the other side of head. Also great for knees. Excellent pain relief
